I love birds (see my photography) but not when they eat our blueberries and grapes in our garden. So I understand the farmer/grower who wishes they stay away from their crops and livelihood. These “flash” metallic coated tapes help scare the birds away from your crops. Birds may not be as smart as humans (although some humans may not be as smart as birds), the birds are not dumb. They will get used to the bird scare tapes over time. So it is suggested that the tapes be put up just before the crop becomes attractive to the birds and taken down afterwards. Some of the most effective ways is to string the tapes on poles above the crop – and they can be often used more than one season.
