Many nurseries, ours included, switched from using budding rubbers to Chip Budding Tape when the results became clear that the percent stands were consistently better. Better stands means not only lower labor costs for budding, but for planting fewer rootstocks (labor and cost of liners), cutting fewer buds, using less land, less irrigation. Efficiency and cost savings across the board.

PARAFILM

Parafilm is an excellent replacement for grafting wax, paraffin, plastic bags, etc., as a method of retaining moisture around graft or bud unions. It can be used alone to hold the scion in place or it can be applied over the usual budding strip or grafting tape which hold the union secure. Parafilm normally breaks down over a period of several months. With faster growing species, it is usually necessary to cut or remove the film from the new graft. Most new buds push through the layers of Parafilm.
